Being a Young Carer is more common than you think. The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates up to one in 10 young Australians are carers.
It can be tough being a Young Carer. You can have no time for friends and problems with school. But we’re here to help.
If you are in primary, high school or college, this is some of the stuff the Young Carer Program can offer, once you’re registered:

  • Camps, movie days and activities – especially in the school holidays
  • Help with homework and extra tutoring
  • Help with housework
  • The chance to talk to someone about what is going on
  • Emergency assistance – if something happens and you need help urgently this can be provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week
  • A trained support worker to come in and look after the person you care for, so this gives you time to do all the stuff you want to do, but can’t because of your caring commitments.

All the help we provide to registered Young Carers is at no cost – it’s FREE! It’s easy to organise some time off to go and have fun, and it doesn’t cost a thing.

Who we are

The Australian Government provides funding to help Young Carers through the Department of Family and Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) Young Carer Program. In Southern Tasmania, the program is run by a not-for-profit organisation called Community Based Support South, as part of the Commonwealth Respite & Carelink Centre.
